When your feet ache, all too often, this pain keeps you away from living your life like you would want. With proper diagnosis and treatment, we can treat most foot and ankle problems. One of the problems we treat are Neuromas .
What is a Neuroma? A neuroma, also referred to as Morton’s Neuroma, is an enlarged, benign growth of nerves, most commonly between the third and fourth toes.
What causes a Neuroma? Neuromas are caused by tissue rubbing against and irritating the nerves. Pressure from poorly fitting shoes or an abnormal bone structure can also lead to this condition. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) warns female runners that the combination of wearing narrow, pointed-toed shoes at work and the pounding their feet endure from running on hard surfaces can cause a Neuroma. Active women who enjoy running, especially those with flat feet, are prone to developing Neuromas.
What are the Symptoms of a Neuroma? Symptoms may include a burning pain that radiates from the ball of the foot to the toes or numbness in the toes.
What are the Treatment Options? Conservative treatments usually resolve the pain or progressions of the condition. Wearing roomier, lower-heeled footwear or using orthotics to reduce the pressure on the nerve can be effective in treating Neuromas. At times, injections of Corticosteroid medication are used to reduce swelling and inflammation.
