Summer Footwear

Flip flops are a popular choice for footwear in the summertime. While they might be convenient and keep you cool, they can also lead to foot problems. First, flip flops do not provide enough cushion for the heel. Second, flat and thin soled flip flops lack arch support causing the foot to lie unnaturally on the shoe. This can cause many different issues including sore feet, infections, scrapes, sprains, heel spurs, hip problems, walking issues, and even lower back pain.

However, if flip flops are your go-to summer shoe, there are things you can look for that will help provide your feet with more of the support they need. When shopping for your flip flops, follow these tips to help your feet want to flip, and not flop!
Choose flip flops with:

  • Sturdy soles with good cushioning—you should never be able to fold your shoe in half.
  • Built-in Arch Support
  • High quality soft leather straps—this will help prevent blisters

Don’t forget to sunscreen up before wearing flip flops, and experts recommend replacing thin-soled flip flops every 3-4 months. You should also never play sports while wearing flip flops, and avoid wearing them for long periods of time.
